Web surfers urged to beware while shopping on 'Cyber Monday'

NEW YORK, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Shoppers who hit the Internet instead of the malls on "Cyber Monday" have their own perils to watch out for, American Express said.

The credit card company said it expected a record number of people worldwide to start Christmas shopping at their computers next week -- and also a number of scams and viruses to complicate things.

The Christian Science Monitor said Saturday many of the steps are well-known precautions for Web surfers -- such as deleting unsolicited e-mails and avoiding sketchy sites. Others are less obvious, including switching off Blue tooth service on mobile devices to minimize the chances a credit-card number will be intercepted.

Public computers or wireless services are not recommended for shopping, due to the possibility an eavesdropping third party could pick up credit-card number or other personal information.
