Producer prices tame in September

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Producer Price Index for finished goods fell 0.1 percent August to September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

Prices for finished energy items rose 0.3 percent in the month. Food prices fell 0.1 percent, while prices paid for core items -- a category that excludes food and energy -- were up 0.1 percent for the month.

Prices for goods in the intermediate stage of production rose 0.1 percent after no change in three of the previous four months. Prices for raw materials rose 0.5 percent after dropping 2.7 percent in August, the bureau said.

On an unadjusted annual basis, the producer price index was 0.3 percent higher in September, considerably lower than the 0.6 percent predicted by economists.
