Hershey to launch Lancaster brand

HERSHEY, Pa., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Confectionery giant Hershey Co. said it would produce a new brand of candy for the U.S. market in 2014 after launching the brand in China this year.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday the debut of the Lancaster line up in the United States will be the first brand launch in the country in 30 years.

The company also said it would custom fit the brand to the U.S. market. The U.S. version of Lancaster caramels will be made in Canada and will be softer and creamier than the Chinese product, the Journal said.

"We're not taking the China product into the United States," said Steven Schiller, the company's senior vice president for sweets and refreshments.

The name of the company predates the name of Hershey as a business. The founder of the company, Milton Hershey's first company was the Lancaster Caramel Co., which began 120 years ago in Lancaster, Pa.

Hershey's headquarters is still in the area, in the city of Hershey, Pa.
