GM recalling nearly 41,000 vehicles

DETROIT, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- General Motors Co. said Saturday it is recalling nearly 41,000 vehicles it built from 2007 to 2009 because of potential fuel leaks that could cause a fire.

GM said the problem is a plastic piece on the fuel pump module that could crack and leak fuel, The Detroit News reported.

While no fires, crashes or injuries have been reported, a GM spokesman said, owners are being asked to bring their vehicles in to a dealership to be checked. If necessary, the module will be replaced, GM said.

The part in question was installed on 40,859 vehicles sold in some hot-weather states.

The newspaper said the vehicles being recalled are the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent vehicles originally sold or now registered in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas; the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion vehicles originally sold or registered in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada or Texas; the2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona; and the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma or Texas.

GM said owners may smell gasoline while the vehicle is being driven or after it is parked. If the crack gets big enough, it could affect vehicle performance and cause a dashboard warning light to come on. Gas could leak onto the ground where it could be ignited, GM said.

The recall will begin next month.
