Gold slides Wednesday

NEW YORK, May 16 (UPI) -- Gold futures fell Wednesday, losing $17.30 to settle at $1,539.80 per troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

With the dollar index up 0.22 percent to 81.42, silver lost 87 cents, or 2.2 percent, to end at $27.21 an ounce.

The euro fell to $1.2714 from Tuesday's $1.273. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 80.32 yen from 80.19 yen.

The British pound was $1.5911 from $1.5993. The dollar was 1.0124 Canadian dollars from 1.0072 Canadian.

The dollar was 7.7687 against the Hong Kong dollar, from 7.7684. The Australian dollar was $0.9923 from $0.9936.
