Report: Yahoo! to lay off thousands

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 5 (UPI) -- U.S. search engine Yahoo! is expected to undergo a substantial restructuring that will terminate thousands of jobs, sources told technology Web site AllThingsD.

The company is expected to make an announcement by the end of the month, the site reported Monday. The divisions targeted for layoffs include public relations, research and marketing, the report said.

Chief Executive Officer Scott Thompson, who took over in January, has hired Boston Consulting Group to advise the company on which direction it should go, AllThingsD (All Things Digital) said.

"Some parts will be cut away, leaving resources to go to better efforts," one source said. "But this has to be a true change to get this company back on track."

The head of Yahoo! Labs, Prabhavar Raghavan, is already jumping ship, heading for a job at Google, the Web site reported.

This may be the first among several executive departures, given reports that indicate Raghavan left because of cuts expected in his department at Yahoo!, the report said.

There are 14,100 workers at the company, Yahoo! said in its most recent quarterly report.
