Gold slides slightly

NEW YORK, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Gold prices rose slightly in New York Tuesday as the dollar was split against the euro and the yen.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold gained $6 even to reach $1,740.40 per troy ounce. Silver shed 42 cents to hit $33.10 per ounce.

The dollar index rose 0.18 percent to 79.28, as the euro rose to $1.3089 from Monday's $1.3083. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 76.29 yen from Monday's 76.27 yen.

The British pound rose to $1.5765 from $1.5761. Against the Hong Kong dollar, the greenback was higher at 7.7553 from 7.755.

The dollar rose to 1.0021 Canadian dollars from 1.0025. The Australian dollar rose to $1.0626 from $1.0621.
