Vizio breaking into computer business

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. electronics company Vizio Inc. said it will unveil its new series of laptop computers at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.

The company best known for its competitively priced high-definition televisions is breaking into computer products, despite a crowd of heavyweights already in the market, such as Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc., Apple Inc., Toshiba Corp., Acer Inc. and others, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

Vizio said it was looking to squeeze into the market with an ultra-thin laptop that "doesn't look mechanical or industrial," said the company's head of technology, Mathew McRae.

Vizio also plans to undercut Apple in pricing. Apple sells laptop computers called ultrabooks priced between $899 and $1,400.

Vizio did not divulge a price but said it would be "substantially less" than Apple's price range.
