Caribou Coffee hits SAN milestone

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. retailer Caribou Coffee said it has reached a milestone with 100 percent of its beans coming from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

Rainforest Alliance Certified farms meet "comprehensive standards of the Sustainable Agricultural Network," the company said in a statement.

The standards include meeting guidelines on environmental, social and economic fronts.

Caribou Coffee, which operates 554 coffeehouses, set the goal of 100 percent certification in April, having begun working with the Rainforest Alliance in 2003.

"Reaching 100 percent certification is a significant accomplishment for Caribou Coffee," said Senior Director of Coffee and Tea Chad Trewick.

"I've seen how communities thrive from working with the Rainforest Alliance, and I'm proud to say that all of our beans come from sustainable, healthy sources," he said.
