Gold slides before holiday

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Gold, silver and oil prices closed lower Wednesday as equities fell for the third consecutive day on Wall Street and the dollar index rose 1.03 percent.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold gave up $9.40 to reach $1,696.10. Silver lost $1.26 to fall to $31.77 per ounce.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil shed $2.19 to $95.82 per barrel.

The euro fell to $1.3344 from Tuesday's $1.3505. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 77.28 yen from Tuesday's 76.97 yen.

The dollar was higher across the board.

The British pound fell to $1.5531 from Tuesday's $1.5634. Against the Hong Kong dollar, the U.S. standard rose to 7.794 HKD from 7.7929 HKD.

The dollar rose to 1.0469 Canadian from 1.0384 Canadian. The Australian dollar fell to $0.9697 from Tuesday's $0.9837.
