Samsung, Micron team up on chip project

SEOUL, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. said it's working with Micron Technology Inc. to develop technology to produce a high-performance memory chip.

Yonhap News Agency Saturday reported Samsung, the world's largest chip-maker, and Micron, the largest U.S. chip-maker, will produce a hybrid "cube technique" in which chips are stacked on top of one another. That, in turn, will make chips more efficient and faster in supplying data to computer processors.

Samsung said the technique will speed the flow of data and save energy.

Micron, based in Boise, Idaho, said in a news release the technique could lead to unprecedented levels of memory performance and facilitate new applications in networking, medical, energy, wireless communications, transportation, security and other markets.
