Gold slips Wednesday

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Gold prices went into retreat Wednesday in New York as the dollar index rose 0.33 percent.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold gave up $41.80 after gaining $58.90 in the previous session. In late afternoon trading Wednesday, gold settled at $1,610.20 per troy ounce.

Equities fell on Wall Street after a three-day rally, the Dow Jones industrial index giving up 1.61 percent. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 2.07 percent.

The dollar was mixed in Asia and stronger in Europe.

The euro fell $1.3544 from Tuesday's $1.3589. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 76.54 yen from 76.81 yen.

The British pound fell to $1.5577 from $1.5634. The U.S. standard was 7.7942 Hong Kong dollars from Tuesday's 7.7978 Hong Kong dollars.
