Industrial production rises in Europe

BRUSSELS, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Industrial production rose 1 percent in the 17-member eurozone in July, the EU statistical office Eurostat reported Wednesday.

Production rose after a sharp 0.7 percent decline May to June.

Among the 27-member European Union, production rose 1.1 percent after declining 1.2 percent in the previous monthly report.

On an annual basis, industrial production rose 4.2 percent in the eurozone and 3.6 percent in the European Union, the figures coming in shy of expectations.

Energy production fell 0.8 percent in the eurozone and rose 1.3 percent in the EU month-to-month. Durable goods manufacturing, which declined in the previous report, rose 2.9 percent in the eurozone and 2.8 percent in the EU month-to-month.

Non-durable goods production of consumer goods fell 0.6 percent in the eurozone and 0.3 percent in the EU.

Among EU member states with data available, production rose highest in Estonia, up 4.7 percent, and Germany, where production climbed 4.1 percent.

Production fell steepest in Slovakia and Portugal, falling 3.4 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
