Polish finance minister gives dire warning

WARSAW, Poland, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The financial minister of Poland, Jacek Rostowski, says Europe's economy could "collapse" if countries do not rally their support around the euro.

"European elites, including Germany elites, must decide if they want the euro to survive -- even at a higher price -- or not," the EUobserver reported Monday.

"If not, we should prepare for a controlled dismantling of the currency zone. We have a simple choice: Solidarity or the collapse of Europe."

Last week, German President Christian Wulff said the European Central Bank was wrong to buy Italian and Spanish bonds, after which Rostowski said, "The fundamental problem of the eurozone is not an economic but a political one. The choice is [to have] much deeper macroeconomic integration in the eurozone or its collapse. There is no third way."

He said such a collapse would be "catastrophic for Poland."

Rostowski also criticized Finland after it called for collateral from Greece to secure the next tranche on its intentional bailout loans.
