Ford earned $1.9 billion before taxes in the United States, with sales of smaller vehicles on the rise, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

In Europe, pre-tax profits dropped to $176 million compared to $322 million in the second quarter of 2010. In Asia-Pacific and Africa, Ford's earnings were $113 million April through June 2010 and $1 million in the same period this year.

Pre-tax profits in South America also dropped, falling from $285 million a year earlier to $267 million.

Ford attributed most of the shrinking earnings to overseas investments. Ford has said it would spend $350 million to build a transmission plant in China and has committed $72 million to expand an engine plant in India.
