States, 2 to 1, see unemployment drop

WASHINGTON, June 18 (UPI) -- Twenty-four states saw their unemployment rates decrease in May, while 13 saw increases, The Labor Department said.

In the regional employment and unemployment report released Friday, the department said 13 states had no unemployment rate change in May. In the District of Columbia, the rate increased in the month.

Florida added the most non-farm jobs in May, gaining by 28,000. Ohio added 12,000 jobs in the month, while Arizona and Louisiana added 10,000 each.

The largest declines were posted by California, down 29,200, New York down 24,700 and Pennsylvania, which lost 14,200 jobs in the month. Michigan and Maryland each lost more than 13,000 jobs in May.

The unemployment rate is highest in Nevada at 12.1 percent. California's unemployment rate, second highest in the nation, is 11.7 percent. North Dakota, on the other end of the spectrum, has an unemployment rate of 3.2 percent, the lowest in the country.
