New vehicle sales declining in Canada

OTTAWA, June 14 (UPI) -- Sales of new vehicles in Canada declined in April and a further fall was forecast for May, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday from Ottawa.

Total sales of cars, trucks and buses were down 1.1 percent to 134,529 vehicles in April, and the federal agency said preliminary data was pointing to a 6 percent decline in May.

A decline of 3 percent in sales of minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses dragged down advances in cars, the agency said.

"Passenger car sales increased 1.4 percent, a third consecutive monthly gain. Overseas-built passenger cars accounted for the advance, rising 5.4 percent," StatsCan said. "After three months of gains, sales of North American-built passenger cars fell 0.8 percent."

Regionally, new vehicle sales were marginally up in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia and the territories, but those were offset by declines in the rest of the country, the report said.
