WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) -- The International Monetary Fund in Washington said hackers breached its computer system in a cyberattack officials called a serious event.
"This was a very major breach," said an IMF official who said the cyberattack was perpetrated over a period of several months, The New York Times reported Saturday.
David Hawley, a spokesman for the IMF, a fund that helps manage international financial crises, said, "We are investigating an incident, and the fund is fully functional."
Officials at the World Bank, which has its headquarters close to the IMF in Washington, said it had taken the precaution of severing the computer link between itself and the IMF.
The World Bank said it was dealing with the incident with "an abundance of caution," the Times said.
