The bank said Friday that personal information concerning 420,000 customers, including passwords that allowed transactions to occur, had been stolen.

Police said the suspect was apprehended after he paid a user fee for an Internet server that was used to hack into the bank's data base.

The suspect said he paid $6 to the server at the request of an unidentified person whom he knew from an Internet chat room, Yonhap reported.

Police are also looking for suspects in the Philippines, a man and a woman, who were caught on bank cameras withdrawing money from an account where the bank sent $63,723 in response to an e-mailed request for money in return for keeping the stolen data secret.

The suspects, described as in their 20s, withdrew about $26,500 from the account, police said.
