NEW YORK, March 17 (UPI) -- Gold futures climbed to $1,404.30 per troy ounce in New York Thursday, as the dollar index fell 0.94 percent.
Commodities made a comeback as Japan said it was making progress containing damage at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. April delivery crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange added $3.64 to reach $101.62, a gain of 3.7 percent. Gold added $8.30, a gain of 0.5 percent.
Copper, coffee, sugar lumber and cattle futures also made gains.
The euro rose to $1.4018 from Wednesday's $1.389. The dollar slipped to 78.88 yen from 79.85 yen.
The British pound rose to $1.6136 from $1.6139, while the U.S. dollar fell to 7.8024 Hong Kong dollars from 7.8033 HKD.
The Australian dollar fell to $0.9801 from $0.9809.
In India, the dollar rose to 45.14 rupees from 45.065 rupees. Against the South Korean won, the dollar fell to 1,133.45 won from 1,134.95.
