U.S. stock indexes close lower

NEW YORK, March 7 (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes closed lower in New York Monday, as higher crude oil prices rattled investor confidence.

April delivery crude oil prices topped $104 per barrel, as supply concerns related to the conflict in Libya have dominated the commodities market.

By close of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 79.85 points, 0.66 percent, 12,090.03. On the New York Stock Exchange, 693 stocks advanced and 2,301 declined on a volume of 4.2 billion shares traded.

The Nasdaq was off 39.04 points or 1.4 percent to 2,745.63.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was off 11.02 or 0.83 percent to 1,310.13.

The 10-year treasury note was trading at 3.514 percent.

The euro fell to $1.3973 Monday from Friday's $1.3986. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 82.22 yen from Friday's 82.32 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index was off 188.64, or 1.76 percent, to close down 10,505.02.

In London, the FTSE 100 index lost 0.28 percent, 16.61, to 5,973.78.
