Gold makes modest gains Tuesday

NEW YORK, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Gold prices rose modestly in New York Tuesday, as the dollar index fell slightly, dropping 0.09 percent.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold added $16.60 to $1,364.80 per troy ounce. March delivery oil prices shed 33 cents to $87.10 per barrel.

Oil prices are dropping as two weeks of tensions in Egypt have begun to ease slightly.

The euro rose to $1.3631 from Monday's $1.3585. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 82.31 yen from Monday's 82.30 yen.

With few exceptions, the dollar was lower in Europe and Asia.

In India, the dollar fell to 45.22 rupee from 45.331 rupee. The U.S. dollar dropped to 7.7823 Hong Kong dollars from 7.7835 HKD. The dollar fell to 1,099 South Korean won from 1,103.51 won.

The U.S. standard rose against the Canadian dollar to $0.9946 from Monday's $0.9902. The Australian dollar rose to 1.0146 from Monday's 1.0136.
