DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday it would join the hybrid bandwagon with production of a battery-powered Focus at its assembly plant in Wayne, Mich.

The Michigan Assembly Plant would begin building a battery-powered Focus in 2011. The same plant would also build a separate hybrid vehicle and a plug-in vehicle in 2012, both of those with Focus platforms, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

With production of a gasoline-powered Focus at the same plant, that adds up to four separate power trains out of the same plant.

"For years, I had this vision of a green Ford Motor Co., but we didn't have the technology before. Now we are electrifying mainstream vehicles," Executive Chairman Bill Ford said.
