523,500 window shades recalled

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A strangulation death of a child has prompted the recall of 523,500 window shades, a U.S. watchdog agency said.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Hanover Direct Inc. of Weehawken, N.J., was recalling Roman roll-up and roller window blinds after a 22-month-old was found strangled by the cord of a Roman shade.

The cords of each style of window blind pose a hazard to children, the commission said.

The shades involved in the recall were made in China and the United States and sold at Hanover Direct stores, which are also known as Domestications. They were also sold at Company Store and Company Kids stores.

They were sold between January 1996 and October 2009 for between $20 and $579.

Consumers were advised to stop using the Roman shades with inner cords and all roll-up and roller blinds that do not have a tension mechanism.

Consumers can call 800-453-1106 for information.
