U.S. markets close mixed

NEW YORK, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. markets closed mixed Friday with the third-quarter reporting season showing decidedly uneven results so far.

In the current week's reports, Gary Jenkins, head of fixed income at Evolution Securities, said a majority of reports -- 85 out of 103 -- showed that earnings beat expectations, but only 46 of those reported revenue that exceeded expectations, The Wall Street Journal reported.

At the end of trading the Dow Jones industrial average lost 14.01 points, 0.13 percent, to 11,118.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 0.24 percent, 2.82, to 1,183.08. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.8 percent, 19.72, to 2,479.39.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,758 stocks advanced and 1,172 declined on a volume of 4.8 billion shares traded.

The benchmark 10-year treasury note fell 5/32, to yield 2.56 percent.

The euro rose to $1.395 from Thursday's $1.3925. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 81.36 yen from Thursday's 81.33 yen.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index rose 0.54 percent, 50.23, to 9,426.71.

In Britain, the FTSE 100 index lost 0.29 percent, 16.49, to 5,741.37.
