Domain name sex.com sold for $13 million

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- To-the-point domain name sex.com has been sold to Caribbean company Clover Holdings Ltd. for $13 million from its bankrupt owner, court papers say.

Out of 12 bids filed in bankruptcy court in California, the name has been resold for about the same sum bankrupt firm Escom LLC paid for it in 2006, The Register reported Thursday.

The new owner, Clover Holdings, "is a bit of a mystery," The Register said. But the court said it was "the highest and best offer" for the name that was originally registered by entrepreneur Gary Kremen in 1994.

Not long after Kremen registered the name it was put to use, illegally, by Stephen Cohen, who made $500,000 a month from advertising by using the name. Kremen recovered the name after five years pursuing the issue in court. Cohen, meanwhile, fled to Mexico and was later jailed. He was released from prison in 2006.
