Buyer interested in Boston Globe

BOSTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A potential buyer has expressed interest in The Boston Globe and a sister newspaper in Worcester, Mass.

A Massachusetts company, 2100 Trust, issued a statement Wednesday saying it is putting together an investor group and intends to put in a bid for the Globe and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the Boston Herald reported. The two newspapers are owned by The New York Times Co.

The Times tried to sell the Globe last year but took it off the market when it failed to receive an attractive offer.

This suitor, headed by 37-year-old greeting card entrepreneur Aaro Kushner, hasn't divulged how much it may offer, the Herald said.

"The Boston Globe has been a pillar in the city, the commonwealth and the region for more than a century," 2100 Trust said in a statement. "We believe that The Boston Globe's strongest days can be ahead. It is essential that the Globe be positioned for its next 100 years. This will require the significant long-term investment that we intend to make. One of the principal areas of investment will be the newsroom, which is due for a significant increase."

Times spokeswoman Abbe Serphos said the company had no comment on the potential bid.

"The Boston Globe is an important part of The New York Times Co. The Globe has made excellent progress and is on solid financial footing. Its continued digital and print progress signals a strong future," Serphos said in a statement.
