Weaker dollar pushes gold to record

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. dollar fell against a battery of currencies Thursday, pushing commodities higher, including gold which hit a record $1,377.60 per troy ounce.

Crude oil prices were flat on the New York Mercantile Exchange, hitting $82.90 per barrel, but the bellwether commodity has been sitting on a new plateau since late September, sparked by currency fluctuations.

The dollar index, a pro-rated measurement of the greenback against six major currencies, dropped 0.71 percent. Against the Australian dollar, the U.S. standard fell to 0.994 from Wednesday's 0.99901. The dollar fell to 7.7571 Hong Kong dollars from 7.7602 and to 81.42 yen from Wednesday's 81.77 yen.

Against the Canadian dollar, the greenback slid to 1.0039 from Wednesday's 1.0048. Against the euro, the dollar dropped to $1.4082 from $1.3957.
