SmileMakers children's jewelry recalled

WASHINGTON, July 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of SmileMakers Inc. children's jewelry due to high levels of cadmium.

About 66,200 charm bracelets and 2,200 rings were imported from China and distributed nationwide by SmileMakers Inc. of Spartanburg, S.C., from June 2005 through March 2010 for free at doctor and dentist offices.

The recall involves "Happy" charm bracelets and football rings. The bracelet is made up of brightly colored beads on an elastic band with a metal charm of either a butterfly, moon or sun. The football ring is silver-colored with a charm shaped like a football.

The commission said the metal substrate of the jewelry contains high levels of cadmium, which is toxic of ingested.

Consumers were advised to take the recalled products from children and discard the items.
