Grain futures sharply higher Thursday

CHICAGO, April 15 (UPI) -- Grain futures turned sharply higher on the Chicago Board of Trade Wednesday, despite a 0.37 percent rise in the dollar index.

Corn was up 5 to up 5 1/2, soybeans were up 15 to up 17, wheat was up 4 to up 5 1/2 and oats were up 1 3/4.

Corn prices rose with increased export sales and a surge in fund buying. Wheat futures rose with an early surge that tailed off as trading progressed. Soybean prices found support from forecasts of rain delaying the harvest in Argentina.

Corn: May 3.63 1/4, up 5 1/4; Jly 3.73 3/4, up 5 1/4; Sep. 3.84 1/4, up 5 1/2; Dec 3.94 1/4, up 5.

Soybeans: May 9.84, up 15; Jly 9.93, up 16; Aug 9.88 3/4, up 17; Sep 9.69 1/2, up 15 1/2.

Wheat: May 4.80 1/4, up 5 1/2; Jly 4.92 3/4, up 5 1/2; Sep 5.09 3/4, up 5 1/2; Dec 5.36 1/4, up 4.

Oats: May 2.17 1/2; Jly 2.22; Sep 2.30; Dec 2.42 -- all up 1 3/4.
