A widow, a lawyer and $10M missing

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., April 13 (UPI) -- The widow of a widely respected leader from Afghanistan is suing her American lawyer in Florida for allegedly stealing $10 million, court papers show.

Attorney Manley Thaler and Abdul Madjid Zabuli's widow helped set up the multimillion-dollar foundation on the former finance minister's behalf after he died at age 102 in 1998.

Freida Madjid, the finance minister's widow, learned in 2006 Thaler had informed bankers in Guernsey, an island in the English Channel, she had resigned from the foundation's board and $10 million had been transferred from the foundation to a dummy corporation in Liechtenstein, court papers say.

Authorities in Guernsey and Liechtenstein have investigated the allegations and concluded no laws were broken, the Palm Beach, Fla., Post reported Tuesday.

Thaler's attorney, Eileen O'Malley, has filed papers asking for a dismissal claiming Liechtenstein is still investigating the issue and the Florida suit "seeks to harass and/or embarrass" her client.

Madjid's attorney said, in response: "Mr. Thaler is here. All the actions he took were out of an office in West Palm Beach."
