London Times Online to charge for access

LONDON, March 26 (UPI) -- News International said its online newspapers the Times of London and The Sunday Times would begin charging in June for access to their Web sites.

The fee would come to $1.50 per day or $3 for seven days of access for those in Britain. For international customers, the fees would be twice that, The Times of London reported Friday.

"At a defining moment for journalism, this is a crucial step towards making the business of news an economically exciting proposition. We are proud of our journalism and unashamed to say that we believe it has value," said Rebekah Brooks, chief executive officer of News International.

Web sites for two other newspapers produced by the company, The Sun and The News of the World, would also be converted to pay-for sites in the future, The Times said.

James Harding, editor of The Times, said the Web site would have "all the values of the printed paper and all the versatility of digital media. We want people to do more than just read it -- to be part of it."
