Carbon Motors vies for Energy Dept. grant

CONNERSVILLE, Ind., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Carbon Motors says it wants a $380 million federal loan to renovate a former Visteon Corp. facility in Indiana to build high-tech police cruisers.

"Our application unequivocally meets or exceeds all technical, business, and legal requirements of the loan program and we believe the U.S. Department of Energy will quickly realize that it is in the national security and socioeconomic interests ... that the Carbon E7 vehicle be expedited to production," Carbon Motors Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William Santana Li said.

"Our country burns through 1.5 billion gallons of fuel every year having our law enforcement operations patrol our communities," said Li, a former Ford Motor Co. executive.

With the new E-7 police cruiser, "we're going to be able to cut that 40 percent," he said, WCPO, Cincinnati, an ABC News affiliate reported on its Web site.

The company's plans foresee adding 1,300 jobs to the Connersville, Ind., job market, The Indianapolis Star reported Thursday.

Visteon closed the 1.8 million-square-foot facility in 2007, affecting 890 workers, the Indiana Economic Digest reported at the time.
