Tim Hortons chain set to invade New York

NEW YORK, July 10 (UPI) -- The owner of 13 Dunkin' Donuts outlets throughout New York says it is changing the franchise to Tim Hortons doughnut chain locations.

The Riese Organization plans on opening the 13 new Tim Hortons locations Monday and Riese Chief Executive Officer Dennis Riese informed potential customers all of the eateries' breakfast goods will be made on-site, the New York Post said Friday.

"Unlike Dunkin' Donuts, Tim Hortons has a full-service kitchen and does all its baking on premises," Riese said. "Business should be strong throughout the day, and not just during the morning rush."

Hortons is the most popular doughnut chain in Canada and currently has 3,400 total locations. Only 500 of those are in the United States.

Riese told the Post the doughnut changeover comes in the wake of a legal battle over a 1998 report detailing the existence of mice in one of his corporation's Dunkin's locations in New York.

"It got really heavy-handed -- they acted as if no other Dunkin' Donuts ever had a mouse run through it," Riese said of the conflict between his corporation and the Dunkin's Donuts chain.
