Group to sue Johnson & Johnson in China

BEIJING, March 27 (UPI) -- Lawyers in Beijing plan to file suit against Johnson & Johnson, claiming the U.S. home products giant's products hurt children in China.

Lawyers said they would file a complaint in April on behalf of 80 families. In addition, attorney Cui Baoyu said, "we are considering class action … because of the huge number of victims involved."

Two Chinese consumer products agencies have issued contradictory reports pertaining to the case, China.org reported Friday.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said one batch of 26 different baby products tested included 1,4-dioxane, an unregulated agent used in cosmetics in China and the United States. The products, however, tested within limits for cosmetic formaldehyde.

The State Food and Drug Administration found 14 tests revealed neither 1,4-dioxane nor formaldehyde.

However, as the FDA examined the formulas and the AQSIQ examined finished products, "the results are not contradictory," FDA spokeswoman Yan Jiangying said.
