Microsoft retreats on reclaiming pay

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. has retreated from its pursuit of funds it says were paid in error to 1,400 laid-off workers.

The company wrote the employers who lost their jobs that, "due to an administrative error," many severance checks were larger than they should have been.

Hearst newspapers reported Tuesday that Microsoft admitted it made a mistake asking for money back.

"I don't think it's worthy of us asking them to make that payment back to us," Lisa Brummel, Microsoft's senior vice president of human resources, said.

"Occasionally, we have clerical errors and we rectify that by paying them (more) if they were underpaid and asking them to pay back the money if they were overpaid," Brummel said.

However, the laid-off workers were a "unique population," she said.
