Fastest electric car hits the road

WEST RICHLAND, Wash., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. niche automaker Shelby Supercars unveiled Friday what it calls the world's fastest electric car -- a vehicle capable of hitting 208 mph.

The Ultimate Aero EV is not only capable of flying down the road, it can be recharged in 10 minutes, using a system the company calls "Charge on the Run," the Telegraph reported Friday.

On the road, the Ultimate Aero EV can reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, the company said.

"The Ultimate Aero EV will prove that electric-powered vehicles will not only match but also provide more overall performance than internal combustion cars," a company spokesman said.

The Ultimate Aero EV is expected to reach showrooms by the end of the year. The price of the car has not been announced.

Shelby Supercars also makes the fastest gas-powered car currently in production, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, which reaches a top speed of 257 mph.
