SEC probing Apple's CEO health disclosures

WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is looking into Apple Inc.'s disclosures about its chief executive officer's health problems, sources said.

CEO Steve Jobs' health has been a matter of public speculation ever since he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

After recovering from surgery to take care of the cancer, speculation intensified last year based on public appearances in which Jobs appeared gaunt. After skipping the MacWorld trade show earlier this month, Apple said Jobs would take a leave of absence until June due to "more complex" health problems. About a week before the announcement Jobs, in a statement, said he was suffering from a "hormone imbalance," that was treatable.

While critics have complained the information is vital to assessing a company, Apple and Jobs have said his health is a private matter.

When his leave of absence was announced, shares of Apple stock fell, the Journal said.
