Jaguar Land Rover plans to cut 450 staff positions. Bank of America and Merrill Lynch, which combined forces last year, will trim 1,900 jobs, some in London, The Times said.

Adding to the list, machinery company JCB said Tuesday it would cut 700 positions. Logistics business Wincanton will shed 1,000.

Land of Leather and Newcastle Productions both of which went into administration (bankruptcy) potentially could mean the loss of 1,500 more jobs, The Times said.

Economists predict the number of unemployed in Britain, currently at 1.86 million, could swell to 3 million by 2010.

"Clearly, these choices are very difficult. No company wants to lose skilled and experienced employees in any condition," Jaguar said in a statement.

"Throughout the process we will ensure employees are treated with dignity," the statement said.
