New gadgets 'cool,' but are there buyers?

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- This year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas unveiled many cool new gadgets, but an analyst doubts many will find buyers in a poor economy.

Manufacturers rolled out such impressive-looking items as the Palm Pre "smart phone" and Panasonic Corp.'s portable Blu-ray player. But American Technology Research equity analyst Rob Sanderson noted consumer markets are stressed, USA Today reported Saturday.

"The PC sector is seeing weakness worse than we think the market is expecting," Sanderson wrote in a research note. "Most companies are downsizing. This is not an optimistic start. Business conditions remain poor and there is little visibility."

Many of the items at the show, such as televisions with super-thin screens, 3D imagery, wireless connections and ultra-sharp picture quality, are also very expensive, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Optimists, however, said that by the time this year's new products are developed further and come down in price, hopes are the economy will be bouncing back, the newspaper said.
