The company said the cost savings would require up to $600 million to implement, but it expected to begin realizing savings by the third quarter of 2009.

The company had announced in May it would layoff between 1,500 and 2,500 workers, putting the year's job reduction potentially as high as 8,500.

Along with the announcement, the company said Rich Green, its executive vice president of software, had resigned.
