Digital boarding passes are catching on

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration said it would expand a paperless boarding pass system for airlines to a nationwide system next year.

Delta Airlines spokeswoman Betsy Talton said the carrier would expand its paperless pass system to Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Orlando, Fla. Currently, the airline uses a digital bar code system for boarding passes at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

Alaska Airlines also said it would expand its paperless pass program next year, spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey said.

The paperless boarding pass system -- using bar codes displayed on cell phones and personal digital assistants -- is also expected to expand overseas.

In "two to four years" paperless boarding passes are "going to be standard across Europe," said Oliver Wagner, a vice president of Lufthansa.

Lufthansa, a German airline, and KLM, a French carrier, have already started using the bar code system, the newspaper reported.
