One significant spike was seen in the number of visitors who arrived in Canada from France, specifically the province of Quebec, whose capital, Quebec City is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year, StatsCan said. In August, some 40,000 travelers from France arrived, up 4.6 percent from July. On an annual basis, that represents a 26.6 percent increase, the report said.

Of the top five overseas markets, Germany, Japan and Australia also posted increases, while travel from Britain slipped 0.2 percent.

Canadian travel to countries other than the United States fell 2.3 percent to 665,000 trips in August, StatsCan said.
