U.S. markets mixed on banking fears

NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes closed mixed after a seesaw day Tuesday with investors keeping an eye on the troubled banking industry.

Bank shares were mostly lower. Shares of the Federal Home Loan Corp. fell 25.63 percent, while shares of the Federal National Mortgage Association dropped 27.85 percent. Wachovia shares slid 7.34 percent, while Citigroup fell 4.53 percent.

By close Tuesday, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 92.65 points to 10,962.54, off 0.84 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 13.39 points to 1,214.91, down 1.09 percent. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.13 percent to 2,215.71, up 2.84 points.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 811 stocks advanced and 2,402 declined on a volume of 1.857 billion shares traded.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note gained 7/32 to yield 3.834 percent.

The dollar fell. The euro traded at $1.5903 from Monday's $1.5898, while the dollar traded at 104.72 yen from Monday's 104.78 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei index lost 255.60 points to 12,754.56, off 1.96 percent.

In London, the FTSE 100 index fell 1.99 percent to 5,194.90, down 105.50 points.
