At the end of 2007, Google had 16,805 employees, The New York Times reported. Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt, concerned with rising costs, has said the company, which added 6,100 employees last year, would decrease its hiring rate.

Google also said it would sell Performics Search Marketing, a DoubleClick unit that helps place ads on search engines, including rivals Yahoo! Inc. and Microsoft Corp., the Times reported.
