Former GM exec. charged with fraud

CHICAGO, March 15 (UPI) -- A former General Motors executive and a Chicago man were indicted for allegedly diverting about $80 million from the automaker through the sale of bulk metal.

Daniel Bealko, a former GM global commodities manager, and businessman Anthony Demetrius Brown were indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Chicago, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday.

Investigators say Brown paid Bealko about $5.4 million to ensure General Motor's bulk aluminum was sold through his company, Northfield-based Fuci Metals USA.

The newspaper said the men were charged with two counts of wire fraud and two counts of interstate transportation of fraudulently obtained funds.

Bealko additionally was charged with two counts of income tax evasion for allegedly failing to pay more than $2 million in federal income taxes for 2002 and 2003 on the $5.4 million kickbacks authorities say he received.

If convicted, each count in the indictment carries maximum penalties of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the wire fraud, 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for interstate transportation of fraudulently obtained funds and five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for income tax evasion, the newspaper said.
