Canada's net worth reaches $5.5 trillion

In the fourth quarter of 2007, the value of all things Canadian grew by $77 billion, an increase of 1.4 percent.

National wealth -- the sum of produced assets plus land -- slowed to a growth rate of 1.3 percent, the report said.

Housing cooled in the fourth quarter, the report said, but residential real estate still accounted for more than half the gain in the national net wealth.

In the quarter, the government's net debt rose after 14 consecutive quarters of declines. But the government's ratio of debt to gross domestic product remained steady.

Canada's debt accounts for less than half of its gross domestic product, as compared to 1996, the report said, when it accounted for 90 percent.
