S&P cuts Washington Mutual credit rating

NEW YORK, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- The credit rating for financial services company Washington Mutual was dropped a notch Friday from A- to BBB by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services.

The move, which included an overall negative outlook, was taken following Washington Mutual's poor earnings showing Thursday, S&P said. It confirmed the company also was hit with an A-2 short-term ratings, MarketWatch reported.

"The weak earnings for 2007 and the prospects for similar performance in 2008 are beyond the tolerance for the 'A' rating on the bank," S&P said in a statement.
