GM can't keep up with Malibu demand

DETROIT, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- General Motors has a big hit on its hands -- the new Chevrolet Malibu -- and is having problems meeting demand.

GM says it may be spring before it can build enough of the family sedan Americans seem to crave.

Meanwhile, thousands of dealers are without a made-over Malibu on their lots and GM wonders how long motorists will be willing to wait, the Detroit News said.

Exec Mark LaNeve said a big demand was expected but not to the extent the automaker has seen since the car hit showrooms Nov. 1.

GM sold about 7,000 Malibus in November, roughly the same number as last year. December sales are expected to be higher.
