NAGOYA, Japan, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp. set a sales target of 9.85 million vehicles worldwide for 2008, aiming to break General Motors' record of 9.55 million in annual sales.
If the Japanese automaker reaches its ambitious global sales projections next year, it would increase sales 5 percent from 2007, topping the 9.55 million vehicles GM sold in 1978, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Toyota projected worldwide sales of 9.36 million vehicles in 2007, a 6 percent increase from 2006. Toyota, on the popularity of the Corolla, Camry and Prius gas-electric hybrid, sold more vehicles than GM during the first half of the year but GM regained the sales lead in the nine-month period ending Sept. 30, the Journal said.
General Motors, No. 1 in global auto sales for more than 70 years, said has it expected to produce 9.259 million vehicles worldwide this year.
